Denebolian Republic - History
Curated and preserved by the Denebolian Ministry of Culture & Agriculture
Dates use New Timeline (N.T.) reckoning unless marked OG (Original, Earth) Timeline. The New Timeline begins with the expedition's arrival in 1660 N.T. — though by Earth's own reckoning the expedition departed in 1952. The gap between the two has never been explained yet.
The history of the Denebolian Republic is a long tapestry woven from exploration, conflict, resilience, and progress. From a stranded expedition of SHIELD operatives and scientists, the Republic grew into one of the foremost interstellar powers of the Denebolian Accord. These records trace that journey from a single fragile outpost to an advanced and influential nation.
All historical records and archives are managed and preserved by the Denebolian Ministry of Culture & Agriculture, ensuring the accuracy, accessibility, and integrity of the Republic's documented legacy. The Ministry is dedicated to curating and protecting these records, allowing future generations to understand and appreciate the Republic's journey.
History of Denebolian republic
Project ARC and Early History - from 1952 (OG Timeline)
During the Second World War on Earth, three mysterious Monoliths were recovered and transported to a secret SSR facility known as the Lighthouse. Researchers found that one Monolith could cast matter across the void — a single, irreversible throw that needed nothing waiting at the far end to receive it. After a series of failed and dangerous experiments, the programme — designated ARC (Anomaly Research and Control) — was suspended and classified.
After the war, the SSR evolved into SHIELD, which reopened Project ARC. An expedition was assembled under the command of Level 7 SHIELD agents, the crossing planned in six waves. The second half was lost during transport when an energy overload struck the Monolith laboratory, and the project was halted once contact with the forward team was lost. Those who came through arrived upon an unknown world in a different galaxy entirely.
First Moments on a New Planet - 1660-1748 N.T. (New Timeline)
The survivors arrived with limited resources upon a world that bore no name — for they believed it the only one they would ever know, and a thing needs no name when there is nothing to tell it apart from. Their descendants would, in time, call it Panthal. They raised the first habitats, charted their surroundings, and laid the foundation of what would one day become the Denebolian Republic and its allies.
The First Civilian War - 1748-1800 N.T.
In time, disagreement among the survivors hardened into open conflict. Society fractured into three factions, each gathered around one of the founding SHIELD agents. The SHIELD loyalists held the original landing site; the other two factions departed eastward and were never reintegrated. Centuries later, only their ruins would be found, the peoples themselves long since perished.
The New Berk City Era - 1800-1940 N.T.
After the war the surviving society recovered and prospered, raising New Berk City upon the original terrain, with railways as its principal means of transport. Its technology came to match Earth's early 2000s. In 1935 N.T. a fragment of ancient technology was unearthed — a relic far beyond anything we had made — and the T.A.P. (Technology Assimilation Project) was founded to study and reverse-engineer it. Progress was slow at first, advancing our capabilities by only a few steps, but the fragment would in time prove the single most important discovery in our history.
The Fall of New Berk City - 1940-1946 N.T.
New Berk City fell to two causes. The first was a minor war with a nearby settlement founded by one of the original agents. The second, and far greater, was a cascade of natural disasters: unprecedented climatic upheaval set off a chain reaction across the planet, and tsunamis, hurricanes, and storms devastated the city and most of its structures. Amid the crisis the people of New Berk City declared a new nation — the Star City Empire — though the upheaval also drove further splinter communities to strike out on their own.
Birth of the Star City Empire - 1946-2000 N.T.
The chance to rebuild the capital brought new knowledge and a wider understanding of the surrounding lands. Star City's leadership concentrated on reconstruction and on expanding the nation's social, architectural, and technological reach. This was an age of great scientific advancement, and the Empire once again reached a standard comparable to Earth's 2000s. With the capital partly restored, its citizens turned outward to explore distant lands.
Colonial Era - 2000-2016 N.T.
We established our first colony across the sea, committing resources and expertise to settling new territory. While our attention was fixed abroad, political discord grew at home in Star City, and a new threat took root unseen among us. By the time we recognised the danger, our focus had returned to the homeland, and the colony was largely left to its own leaders. That colony would, in time, become the Kingdom of Arnor.
The Hydra Great War - 2017 N.T.
They lived among us and called themselves our friends. When Hydra declared war, the betrayal was total, and for a time it was hard to tell friend from foe. The Empire was torn apart, with territory held variously by Hydra and by SHIELD. Hydra committed every weapon it possessed to destroying us and destroying SHIELD, but we fought back, withdrawing our forces from the colony to reinforce the homeland.
That decision opened the door to the barbarians, who fell upon the colony in our absence. Its inhabitants blamed us bitterly for abandoning them. As national unrest mounted and the war turned against us, we suffered an unexpected blow: a faction of our former colony, manipulated by Hydra into believing SHIELD meant to attack them, struck at Alfa Site — a fortified base near the colonial border, built before the colony's founding and in service to this day. The attackers intended a pre-emptive siege and to seize the base's supplies. SHIELD, lacking reliable intelligence in the colony, was caught by surprise, yet we repelled the assault with only minor damage and recorded no casualties. The episode prompted the establishment of an intelligence network within the colony.
The breakthrough that turned the war came at last from Project T.A.P. After decades of study, SHIELD's researchers unlocked the recovered fragment, drawing from it crystal-based technology, advanced energy weapons, and new energy systems — and the foundations of what would later become the Stargate. Integrated into our weapons, defences, and power, this knowledge changed the course of the conflict. After brutal fighting and heavy losses on both sides, Hydra bombed a civilian facility — an act so abhorrent that many of its own loyalists surrendered to SHIELD. Our new intelligence network revealed that Hydra had conspired within the colony specifically to poison relations between Star City and its settlers.
As Hydra collapsed, refugees from the colony began arriving at Alfa Site once more — this time not to attack, but to seek shelter from the barbarians. We learned the colony stood at the edge of ruin: divided by one of its own leaders, half its people had taken refuge at the fortress of Sanctuary and half had fled to Alfa Site. Our leaders chose to act, mobilising every military branch and marching to the colony's last stand at Sanctuary. We arrived in the final moments, turned the battle, and stabilised the colony's borders. With the war effectively ended, we opened negotiations with the Hydra remnant over terms of surrender.
Independence of the Eastern Colony and the Birth of Denebol - 2018 N.T.
After the peace, we helped the colony rebuild, though no aid could undo the wound of our earlier abandonment — and our own people did not forget the surprise attack on Alfa Site. Recognising that the colonists had earned their sovereignty, the leadership of Star City and SHIELD granted the colony independence and recognised it as a free and sovereign nation: the Kingdom of Arnor.
The war had left our own government and SHIELD badly damaged, and victory alone could not repair them. We resolved to restructure both the nation and the organisation. SHIELD, together with the civilian population, established a new state — Denebol. Seeing the full potential of cooperation with civilian organisations and enterprises, we began to trade with our neighbours and to advance rapidly in technology. In this same period we made first contact with an alien nation, Amaurëa; after a brief and limited conflict we chose cooperation over rivalry, and worked to build lasting relations. We had learned that when we become part of something greater, we can accomplish anything — and so we offered our neighbours a place in a new alliance: the Denebolian Accord.
The Denebolian Accord Era - 2019 N.T.
Denebol was still governed by SHIELD, but civilian arms of government now took shape alongside it. The young state turned its attention to international trade, civil rights, and the wider peace, standing as the foremost nation upon its homeworld — which it had charted as Denebol 4 — with facilities on Aurorium (Denebol 1) and Luminae (Denebol 7) in the same system. The world had carried no name while it was the only one its people knew; only now, shared between two nations, did the need for one arise. Denebol called it Denebol 4, and Arnor called it Yavanna, until a later consensus settled on the name it bears today: Panthal, or Panthalassa.
It was in these years that the Republic's reach extended beyond a single world, upon a single achievement: the Stargate. Reverse-engineered through Project T.A.P. from the recovered fragment, the Stargate is a Denebolian invention — a device that opens a stable, two-way passage between two worlds. Seeding a gate upon a world that has none is accomplished by C.A.S.T. (Coordinate-Addressed Spatial Translation), known to those who work it as the long throw: an inert gate is cast across the void to a decaying orbit above the target world, where it falls and, built to endure, survives the descent intact. No vessel carries it, and nothing need await it on the far side. A world may hold only one gate, and each is reached by its own address.
Of all the worlds of the Pol Star System — named for our local star — only Panthal bears a gate; its sister worlds are reached by ship within the system, the work of the Zephyr-class craft of the day. The earliest casts reached further than any vessel of the age could travel: among them Pattera, a world some four thousand light-years distant, whose gate is remembered as the old Stargate — for reasons the Republic's own records have never fully accounted for, the cast gates seem now and then to arrive having waited longer than they were sent.
The Start of the Cold War - 2020 N.T.
First contact with the Ingerdimnär came through the gate, during an exploratory crossing, and quickly degenerated into a skirmish, then into unprovoked attacks. So began the long Cold War. In these early years the Republic possessed no warships capable of crossing between the stars; every action beyond the Pol System was fought on foot, stepping through the gate and back again. The Battle of the Oblio Sector and the D45-114 Incident — in which SHIELD dismantled an Ingerdimnär spy ring — were won this way, gate to gate, while movement within our own system remained the work of the Zephyr-class. SHIELD's intelligence and counter-espionage operations proved critical throughout.
In the same period, the Kingdom of Arnor remained locked in its own long struggle against the barbarians. Arnor's earlier appeals for direct intervention had gone unanswered while Denebol stabilised its own institutions and faced the opening of the Cold War. When Denebol at last mobilised — chiefly against the Ingerdimnär — it also committed forces to a joint offensive alongside Arnor. That combined campaign broke the barbarian horde on the ground and drove its survivors from the planet, ending a conflict that had drained Arnor for years and quietly affirming that Denebol had become a stable, unified state.
Intensifying Conflict and the Democratic Era - early 2021 N.T.
Hostilities with the Ingerdimnär deepened as we adopted firmer measures. Diplomatic efforts such as the Draconis Mediation secured only temporary ceasefires, and 2021 saw both sides press hard for advantage.
At home, the strain of war moved citizens to demand greater autonomy in governance. A sweeping civilian reform laid the foundations of a true civil government: Denebol took the name Denebolian Republic, and SHIELD relinquished its rule. The first democratic elections were won by Mr. James Wilson, who became President for the next four years. SHIELD did not vanish in this transition; it stepped back from rulership to become one branch of the Republic's armed forces, retaining its mandate over intelligence, security, and technology — a role it holds to this day. Alongside it, a new national branch was raised to hold the skies and near space: the Denebolian Air & Space Force (DASF), so named for the air power that then made up the greater part of its strength. The DASF began construction of the Denebolian International United Space Station (D.I.U.S.S.), operating at first only a small fleet of Zephyr-class craft.
The new government banned fossil-fuel engines and generators and rebuilt the Republic's infrastructure around clean power, relying on hovercraft, personal transporters, subways, hyperloops, and aircraft. Embracing a more global outlook, the Republic proposed the G.U.A.R.D. (Government Utility Authority – Reinforce Division) initiative: a peace-protection body with international and interstellar jurisdiction, free of influence from any single nation and led by a high council, so that it might serve as an impartial party in conflicts. The proposal sparked fierce debate and, regrettably, destabilised the political situation in the Kingdom of Arnor; the Arnorians joined only reluctantly. Soon afterward, SHIELD obtained and delivered to the Republic's representatives intelligence on Arnorian sub-dimension technology — information the government was bound to release to the public. These events set in motion what would forever be known as the Arnorian Crisis.
The Arnorian Crisis - late 2021 N.T.
When word of Arnor's sub-dimension technology and its dangers reached the Republic, our citizens were outraged. To imperil the whole universe without so much as international supervision was understood as a betrayal of the Denebolian Accord, and a demand for explanation became unavoidable.
The danger was not the only grievance. Early reports held that Arnor had begun visiting other worlds and confronting their peoples — in some cases in ways that resembled enslavement, and the unjustified killing of those who merely voiced dissent, alongside the unlawful imposition of new governments on foreign nations. For our citizens, and for the government above all, the worship of a new goddess was no justification for invading other worlds and converting or slaughtering their inhabitants.
Our response was swift and unforeseen by Arnor's leaders. The Republic imposed a complete embargo on all ongoing cooperation and trade, closed its borders with the Kingdom of Arnor, and placed Arnorian citizens within Denebolian territory under martial law until the matter could be explained and resolved. The embargo crippled the Arnorian economy and ultimately forced its government to a meeting of all three leaders of the Denebolian Accord. After long negotiation, a settlement was reached. Arnor was required to withdraw from all worlds judged too primitive to bear contact with its technology, but was permitted to keep relations with worlds where its presence had eased local conditions or was welcomed by the local population and its representatives. An oversight committee would decide which nations might remain within the Arnorian sphere; those that did were recognised as protectorates of the Kingdom of Arnor. Any newly discovered world falling within the Influence or Prime directives must be reported to the Accord's leaders without delay, and Arnor might spread its faith only in a peaceful manner and only to those willing to listen.
Aftermath of the Arnorian Crisis & the Stellar Exploration Era - early 2022 N.T.
Trust between Arnor and the Republic was badly weakened, but the Republic's attention turned increasingly to interstellar affairs. The maturing of conventional hyperdrive — a faster-than-light drive that runs the charted corridors between the stars — at last gave the Republic true interstellar ships, and with them the DASF came into its own, reorganised after the discovery of interstellar travel into S.T.A.R.S. (Strategic Taskforce for Alien Response and Security). The Republic funded new shipyards and assembled a substantial fleet in a remarkably short time, making interstellar diplomacy, exploration, and expansion its first priority.
Reaching the stars brought new friends and allies. The Republic encountered several peoples and concluded a number of alliances and trade treaties — most notably with the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Gori Merchant Fleet, and, by Stargate, the Eskana people, whose own gate proved older by far than any record of its casting. Many such treaties were in practice protection treaties, for our trade arrangements then carried a full guarantee of defence. These ties enriched the Denebolian economy and drew a wave of alien visitors, placing the Republic firmly upon the interstellar stage. At home, Denebol Prime experienced an urban and population boom as foreign citizens chose to settle within the Republic.
As an unavoidable consequence, the Republic levied sanctions upon the Kingdom of Arnor under the terms of the Accord. When Arnor's government refused to pay, the dispute threatened to escalate into open conflict, and the matter came to an ultimatum. The crisis was eased only by the unexpected arrival of an Eldar diplomatic delegation, whose arguments and skill persuaded Arnor to settle the fines. In this period the Republic also opened an investigation into the Ar-Adûnâim, an Arnorian factional movement whose splinter warbands operate beyond any lawful oversight and which the Republic regards as a source of cross-border crime. Several Arnorian officials suspected of contact with these warbands were named wanted for violations of international law; Arnor declined to surrender them, and the matter is presently treated as a low-level security concern. In time relations between our nations began again to heal and grow stronger.
The Cold War Continues - late 2022 N.T.
Denebol fortified its defences against the Ingerdimnär and invested heavily in innovation. Operation Iron Shield and the Battle of Vortex Station disrupted Ingerdimnär logistics and secured our positions, while diplomacy and new alliances strengthened our wider security through fortified outposts and advanced surveillance.
International Stabilisation & Offensive Strategy - early 2023 N.T.
Shifting to the offensive, Denebol launched pre-emptive strikes and coordinated campaigns to reclaim lost ground. Operation Phoenix Rising and the Siege of La'Grie Outpost were significant victories, and SHIELD's Operation Silent Storm struck at high-ranking Ingerdimnär officials, destabilising their command. In the same period, relations with the Kingdom of Arnor were fully restored. With the Arnorian Crisis resolved, sanctions and security measures were lifted, signifying a return to full cooperation within the Accord, while G.U.A.R.D. continued to investigate lingering concerns regarding certain Arnorian actions abroad.
The Ciris and its Aftermath — late 2023 N.T.
When an energy-generator catastrophe — the event known as the Ciris — struck Annuminas, the capital of Arnor, the Denebolian armed forces mobilised at once to aid our ally. The resulting battle wrought terrible destruction. Our own forces suffered losses, though far fewer than the Arnorian nation, and our hearts went out to the families of the fallen on both sides. The Republic committed itself to helping restore Arnor's power generation and the wider region.
In the wake of the disaster the Republic called an urgent summit of all Accord member states at the G.U.A.R.D. headquarters, chosen for its capacity and security. The agenda was twofold: unprecedented cooperation across all our governments, and a full reckoning with the Ciris and the actions taken in response. The meeting would shape the future of the Accord and every collaboration to come.
The Interstellar Center Era — early 2024 N.T.
As the Republic set its course toward becoming the Interstellar Center of the galaxy, peoples from many worlds chose to make Denebol their home. This influx enriched Denebolian society with countless customs and perspectives; economically it proved a great boon, and culturally it gave rise to a vibrant blending of art, cuisine, and festival. The government enacted policies ensuring equal rights and opportunity for all inhabitants, regardless of their world of origin.
In this same period the Republic established TRACE — the Transport Access – Central Embassy — which became the single point of entry into the Pol Star System. Panthal's home gate was set to refuse every inbound passage save the one that originates at TRACE, and the only charted hyperdrive corridor into the home system runs through it likewise. Whether by gate or by ship, all who would reach the Republic's heart must first pass through TRACE.
Yet the Cold War still loomed. Intelligence indicated the Ingerdimnär were preparing to escalate, and the Republic raised security across its installations and settlements. The first international expedition, the Galactic Pathfinder mission, was announced — to chart uncharted space, forge new ties, supply allied worlds, and fortify the border with the Ingerdimnär.
